Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  1. What tennis equipment do I need?

    You will need a tennis racket to fit your personal requirements, appropriate tennis shoes, comfortable tennis wear, a water container, court seat, and a tennis bag to contain towels, extra shirt(s), personal balls, sun blocks/lotions, personal first aid supplies, or any other article you may need.

  2. Do I need to know how to play tennis to become an Eastside member?

    No. However, Eastside is a tennis club and our main focus is on playing tennis. If you would like to be a member, and desire to learn tennis, you may enroll in the Saturday Adult Program.If you merely want to hold membership in Eastside, we have a youth program that you may support with a tax-deductible donation and/or in which you may volunteer your assistance.

  3. What is the procedure for joining a competitive team?

    Each member is required to complete an application form, where you will check your level of play. The captain of the team you are interested in will call you, invite you play with the team, and provide you with the necessary information on responsibilities, fees, etc. As of 2002, players without an NTRP rating, must self rate.   4. Do I need a physician’s release statement before participating in drills?

    No. Members are expected to keep themselves in good health, be engaged in some type of exercise program outside the Club, and know their own physical limitations.

  5. Do you play tennis year-round?

    Our established programs are basically for the spring and summer. However, team members who play competitively usually play during the winter months as well. It is not mandatory, but encouraged, that they maintain their competitive edge.

  6. What is a NTRP rating?

    NTRP (National Tennis Rating Program) is the official rating system used by USTA (United States Tennis Association) to determine the levels of competition.

  7. Why do I need a NTRP rating?

    A NTRP rating is needed to participate in any USTA-sanctioned tennis league or tournament. If you join an Eastside’s competitive tennis team, you will need a NTRP rating. Click here fore more details.

  8. What is WATL?

    WATL stands for the Washington Area Tennis League, which is the local USA league.

  9. What is a USA League?

    A USA League consists of team competition for men and for women, with advancement from local competition to sectional and national competition to determine annually a championship team in each approved level of competition.

  10. What is an Intramural Tournament?

    An Intramural tournament is a competition among Club members only.

  11. Where do the teams practice?

    Each team chooses a practice site that is convenient or agreeable to its members and their coach.

  12. Am I permitted to use my own expertise in the Club?

    On the Membership Application, you can check your area of interest.  We strongly encourage our members to volunteer their services or expertise in as many Club programs or activities as they wish.

  13. How many Club meetings am I expected to attend?

    Members are expected to attend only two general membership meetings per year—March and October.

  14. How can I get information about any Eastside programs and activities?
